In the 1970s, the KGB developed
the Mezon recorder, shown here
at half its actual size. The
Mezon recorded to a spool of
thin wire instead of tape, and
could be carried in a pocket or
worn in a harness under clothing.
Remote control switches and hidden
microphones (under a lapel, for
example, to record conversations)
made the Mezon a versatile tool.
